PEST SOLUTIONS

TERMITE DEFENCE

Often referred to as white ants, termites are insects which feed on wood and most cellulose containing materials like cardboard, paper, etc. Termites can cause extreme destruction on your home, causing structural damage that is extremely costly to repair.

The key to lowering the cost of termite-related repairs is to conduct frequent termite inspections to detect any issues early on. All Defence Pest Solutions inspections are carried out in accordance with Australian Standard 4349.3 (2010) and Australian Standard 4349.0 (2007).

If you suspect a termite problem or need a pre-construction barrier installed, contact us for a timber pest inspection to determine the appropriate termite management system that should be implemented on your property. â€‹

Pre-construction termite barriers are one of the most crucial decisions you will make when building a new home. Under the Building Regulations, your new home must be fitted with a termite management system or be built with termite resistant structural materials. The purpose of a termite management system is to deter hidden termite entry and reduce the risk of termite attack. Prevention is better than cure!

SPIDER DEFENCE

Australia is home to the world’s deadliest spiders, including the funnel-web spider, redback spider, Wolf Spider, the Black House Spider and the White-Tailed Spider.

Spiders can be divided into two groups – those that spin webs and those that are ground dwelling. Whilst most webbing spiders are not dangerous that does not mean we want them in our homes, and those that are dangerous can make you or your family very ill or even be fatal. Most spiders are active at night so you may not see them during the day.

Your licensed pest controller will check all likely habitats in your home such as corners of windows, along corners and skirting, behind curtains, in ceiling voids, gutter lines, outdoor furniture and garden areas, and advise on potential entry points whilst getting rid of your spider problem.

ANT DEFENCE

Ants are a major problem in many homes, offices and properties in Australia. Types of ants include fire ants, white ants, green ants, bull ants and black ants. They can cause some pretty strong damage that people are unaware of. These include structural damage to buildings, paving, pathways and root damage to plants. Ants have also been known to damage electrical components causing electricity failures or short circuits to your property.

Ants are also carriers and can transfer viral, bacterial and fungal diseases and cause a pretty sharp sting when they bite. We identify, target and exterminate the ant colonies around your home.

COCKROACH DEFENCE

Cockroaches leave behind signs of their presence that are easy to spot before you are likely to see a live insect. As nocturnal creatures, cockroaches usually hide out of sight during the day and only become active at night to search for food.

It is important to discover a cockroach infestation as soon as possible so you can quickly take action to prevent them spreading and multiplying and minimise the health risks associated with this unhygienic insect. Signs of a cockroach infestation: cockroach droppings, smear marks, egg capsules (ootheca), shed skin, a lingering and unpleasant musty smell, visible live cockroaches.

BEE & WASP DEFENCE

Warmer weather brings out many types of Wasps & Bees in Australia. The European Honeybee is Sydney’s most common bee and is responsible for more stings than any other insects. Bees make their nests around homes, between walls and in chimneys, as well as backyards, particularly where there are flowering trees. Wasps build nests in wall cavities, old wood, compost piles, rubbish piles and under the ground. Bees and wasps are also known to hover around your outdoor pool.

Both these insects cause painful stings. The bee injects venom through their tails once they sting, and the wasp can sting repeatedly. Either sting is extremely painful and can cause severe allergic reactions in humans from their venom. Removing bee or wasp nests is dangerous and you should never try do it yourself as you may put yourself in danger.

BED BUG DEFENCE

Bed bugs are a form of parasites. They are small, oval, brown insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bed bugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime. Bed Bugs traditionally live in small cracks and crevices & venture out from this safe harbourage to find a sleeping human. They bite the sleeping person and feed on a blood meal before returning back to the safety of their safe harbour.

Bites can cause skin irritation that becomes itchy or painful, in the form of small red rashes/welts appearing in lines or clusters on the body.

Signs of a bed bug infestation are, small spots of blood on mattresses and bed linens, tiny brown droppings, shed skins from growing nymphs and tiny white eggs and egg casings.

FLEA & TICK DEFENCE

If you have pets, or animals living nearby, there’s a good chance that at some stage you’ll have a flea infestation or come in contact with ticks.

Fleas are extremely tiny insects not usually visible to the human eye. Fleas feed on blood, with female fleas consuming about 15 times their body weight each day. Fleas can make your pet miserable. They can also pose a serious threat to their health, including severe discomfort, flea allergy dermatitis, anaemia, and transmission of a tapeworm infection. Humans also face dangers from flea infestations. A flea bite is intensely itchy, and secondary infections caused by scratching are common. Some people suffer an allergic reaction to the flea saliva, resulting in rashes and other skin irritations. Other health issues can be more serious, including tapeworm, typhus (symptoms of fever, headache confusion and sometimes rashes) and plague.

Tick bites are often harmless, in which case they don’t cause any noticeable symptoms. However, ticks can cause allergic reactions, and certain ticks can pass diseases onto humans and pets when they bite. These can be dangerous or even deadly.

BIRD DEFENCE

Birds can also be considered pests to some. From simply being noisy early in the morning, to nuisance pecking harming paint and woodwork around the outdoor space of your home, birds also may be carriers of bird mites and lice which bite humans – causing an itchy rash, and their droppings also put families at risk of fungal lung diseases, and bacteria which could cause food poisoning, including salmonella. Birds also often express dangerous behaviour such as swooping during mating season.

We use environmentally friendly and humane methods to protect your home or property of nuisance birds, such as pigeons, myna birds, starlings, magpies, sparrows and even seagulls. We will recommend the best bird pest control options for your property and requirements.

RODENT DEFENCE

Rodents (Rats and Mice) are abundant breeders, producing a litter of young almost monthly. Making even the smallest of rodent problems become a large infestation very quickly. Their waste is what is often infections, they produce around 50-70 droppings per day and leave streams of urine on floors and benches to mark their trails. This waste can include dangerous organisms such as the Hanta virus, bubonic plague, and leptospirosis. Rodents can cause flea and lice issues also.

Food poisoning the home or restaurants is very common when you have a rodent issue. This is due to contamination of utensils and food preparation areas from their hair and droppings. Eating food or drinking water contaminated by rats will cause salmonellosis, and any contact with rat urine or faeces can cause leptospirosis, which results in liver and kidney damage.

The Norway rat, Roof Rat and House Mouse are the three major pest rodents found in Australia. Being bitten or scratched by a rat, or even touching a dead rat can give you a nasty case of rat-bite fever. It is always recommended to seek professional help when you have rodents in the home to keep you, your family and your pets safe.
